What's so special about "Weird Al" Yankovic? In this new, compelling book from author Nanci Kirby, find out more about "Weird Al" Yankovic ... Alfred Matthew "Weird Al" Yankovic is an American singer-songwriter, music producer, accordionist, actor, comedian, writer, satirist, and parodist. Yankovic is known for his humorous songs that make light of popular culture and that often parody specific songs by contemporary musical acts. Since his first-aired comedy song in 1976, he has sold more than 12??million albums, recorded more than 150 parody and original songs, and has performed more than 1,000 live shows. His works have earned him three Grammy Awards among nine nominations, four gold records, and six platinum records in the United States. Yankovic's first top ten Billboard album and single were both released in 2006, nearly three decades into his career. Yankovic's success comes in part from his effective use of music video to further parody popular culture, the song's original artist, and the original music videos themselves, scene-for-scene in some cases. He directed later videos himself and went on to direct for other artists including Ben Folds, Hanson, Black Crowes, and The Presidents of the United States of America. There's a Hellhound in Alaska, but it's behaving strangely. Stalking an alcoholic and playing with children who stay at a certain inn, this Hellhound is anything but the vicious, soul-hunting monster it's supposed to be. Though the supernatural hunters, Artemis and Magnus Bishop, came to kill it, they might just end up saving it before their stay in the inn it seems to protect is over.

Dangaioh - Hyper-Combat Unit: The Ultimate Transformers

Dangaioh - Hyper-Combat Unit: The Ultimate Transformers Review

Dangaioh - Hyper-Combat Unit: The Ultimate Transformers Overviews

Initially released as a three-part OAV (1987), Dangaioh has been substantially recut and re-edited for this release. Four Earthlings--Mia, Pai, Lambda, and Roll--have been trained by Professor Tarsan to be "Espers," warriors with psychic abilities. They become the Dangaioh Team (their mecha combine to form the title robot, the most powerful weapon in the universe), battling the evil Galimos. The character designs have a dated look that recalls Robotech (1985) and American Saturday-morning TV. The reworked story line makes very little sense, even with long exposition scenes and a voice-over narration to fill in missing plot points. The English dub is often unintentionally comic: as one of Galimos's minions prepares to incinerate the Dangaioh Team, she declares, "They'll look like French fries when I'm through with them!" Dangaioh reveals the enormous strides Japanese animation made in the years that followed. (Rated 13 and older: violence, minor profanity) --Charles Solomon

Voltron - Defender of the Universe - Collection Two Overviews

The evil Prince Lotor of Planet Doom has come to destroy Planet Arus and take Princess Allura to be his slave. The Voltron Force, Keith, Lance, Pidge and Hunk pilot the Black, Red, Green and Yellow Lions to defend the peacful planet. With Princess Allura in the Blue Lion, they form Voltron and destroy Lotor's robeasts. Frusturated, Lotor targets Planet Pollux, and Allura's cousin Romelle. Can Voltron defend two entire planets at once? And what will happen to the Voltron Force after a poisoned blade leads to Princess Allura's funeral?

Voltron - Defender of the Universe - Collection Two Specifications

Like Robotech, Voltron is a cut-and-paste combination of unrelated series created for American TV. Part of the early wave of "Japanimation" that helped to build an audience for anime in the U.S., Voltron also contributed to the fad for transforming robot toys. The episodes inCollection Three, the "Green Lion" set, originally aired in October and November of 1984. Four young stalwarts from the Galaxy Alliance, Keith, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge, pilot the lion-mecha that link to form the giant robot Voltron; Princess Allura of the planet Arus took over the fifth lion after Sven was wounded in battle. After being missing in action for some time, Sven (who talks like Wally Walrus) reappears in episode 41, but stays on planet Pollux with Princess Romelle as an ally of the Voltron Force. In each episode, Lotor, the son of King Zarkon, and the evil witch Haggar concoct a new scheme to destroy Voltron and seize control of Arus--only to be defeated by Voltron between the last commercial and the closing theme song. Comprised of re-edited footage from Hyakujuo Go-Lion ("Hundred-Beast King Go-Lion") and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV ("Armored Fleet Dairugger XV"), the episodes have obviously been assembled like mosaics, with extensive dialogue covering the gaps in the visuals. Like Robotech, Voltron has a special place in the hearts of adults who watched it as kids. For younger otaku, it's an example of how far Japanese animation has developed in the intervening years--and how much more sophisticated its audience has become. (Rated 7 and older: violence) --Charles Solomon

Media, Masculinities, and the Machine: F1, Transformers, and Fantasizing Technology at its Limits Overviews

Media, Masculinities, and the Machine identifies a distinctive phenomenon in today's media culture: the contemporary male fantasy of pushing technology to its limits. The authors offer two in-depth studies: the social imagining of hi-tech in the long-running Transformers franchise and global Formula One motorsport, with links to numerous other areas of contemporary culture. By drawing on non-representational theory and the latest theories of affect while employing the method of autoethnography to explore what boys and men 'want,' the book offers a timely contribution to our understanding of contemporary cultural attachments. Tracing these through TV, cinema, toys, magazines, merchandising, and the culture of the gadget, the authors raise important questions about mediated masculinities today and propose a new theoretical framework for uncovering what is going on. Concerned with the 'staging of affect,' the book offers its own staging through its innovative form.
